Blackberry tunnels — polytunnels for growing thornless blackberries

For blackberries we build single and multibay tunnels with legs and ground anchors in E370+Z275 steel. We match the tunnel type, bay width and height to the plantation during a visit to the field.

  • 6–11 m bay width
  • E370+Z275 leg and anchor steel
  • From €5.30/m² net per m², with film, excluding transport and installation
  • 3 years warranty on the film

Why grow blackberries under cover

Blackberry canes are very susceptible to frost damage. The integrated production guidelines for thornless blackberry (GIORiN, Poland, 2023) recommend that attractive foreign varieties whose canes have low frost hardiness be protected over winter or grown in a polytunnel.

A tunnel also protects the fruit from rain. According to the NC State Extension guide (2023), growing under cover can extend the harvest season, improve fruit quality and yield, and reduce leaf wetness and disease — and the fruit can be picked even in the rain. This matters for grey mould, which according to the guidelines occurs mainly on the fruit, with its spores spreading during rainy periods.

Blackberry tunnel — structure and supports

Blackberries are trained on wire supports, so the tunnel has to leave room above the rows and stand firm throughout the season. We make the legs and ground anchors from E370+Z275 steel — about 10% stronger than classic S350+Z275, at the same price.

We match the bay width — from 6 to 11 m in 0.5 m steps — and the tunnel height to the row spacing and the supports on the plantation.

Which tunnel for blackberries?

We settle the structure in the field, during a visit from our sales advisor. These are the two types we build.

Single tunnels (Solo)

For blackberries: when the structure is to be moved to another field.

Specifications: Single tunnels

Hoop tubesØ40, Ø50.8, Ø60.3 mm; oval 80×40, 90×50 mm; steel S350+Z275
Heightup to 5 m on upset anchors
Width6–11 m, round or gothic arch
Pricefrom €6.40/m² net (steel structure with film, excluding transport and installation)

Multibay tunnels (Multibay)

For blackberries: larger plantations — shared legs, gutters, lower cost per m².

Specifications: Multibay tunnels

Reinforcing tunnels for blackberries

Lattice cables are standard in multibay tunnels; the ridge tube is standard in single tunnels. You add T or V horizontal bracing as an option for both types.

  1. Diagram of three bays of a multibay tunnel with lattice cables marked in red: diagonal cables from the legs to the hoops form a network inside the tunnel.

    Standard in multibay tunnels

    Lattice cables

They hold the tunnel in the wind and partly take the load off it under snow.

  2. Diagram of three tunnel bays with the ridge tube marked in red: the tube runs below the apex of the arches along the full length of the bay.

    Standard in single tunnels

    Ridge tube

It stiffens the tunnel from above and stops the arches from spreading.

  3. Cross-section of three tunnel bays with V horizontal bracing marked in red: a horizontal tube in the upper part of the arch and two short diagonal braces to the hoop.

    Option in both types

    T or V horizontal bracing

It strengthens the tunnel most against snow.

Strongest combination in multibay tunnels

Lattice cables + horizontal bracing

Best in a T or V variant — both are similarly effective. The cables hold the tunnel in the wind, and the bracing together with the hoop forms a truss that carries the snow.

From enquiry to a tunnel in the field

  1. Enquiry

You call, write or fill in the configurator: crop, field dimensions, timing.

  2. Site visit

We match the tunnel type, bay width, tube profile and arch shape to the crop and the conditions in the field.

  3. Production

We make the structure and accessories at our own plant in Bralin (Wielkopolska Voivodeship) — about 10 ha of tunnels per month.

  4. Delivery

We bring the packed parts to the field, and the tubes are bent on site, at the customer's. Transport is quoted separately.

  5. Installation

We install the tunnels as a full service or support your crew with our fitter. Installation: from €1.90/m² net.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth growing blackberries in a tunnel?

The integrated production guidelines for thornless blackberry (GIORiN, Poland, 2023) state that blackberry canes are very susceptible to frost damage, and recommend that foreign varieties with poor frost hardiness be protected over winter or grown in a polytunnel.

Which tunnel for blackberries?

We choose the type to suit the plantation during a visit. Multibay tunnels — bays on shared legs, with gutters — work out cheaper per m² on larger areas. A single tunnel is easier to relocate, and it is warmer inside.

How much does a blackberry tunnel cost?

Multibay tunnels: from €5.30/m² net. Single tunnels: from €6.40/m² net. Steel structure with film, excluding transport and installation.
